San Diego High Schools Boost Athletic Participation Through Community Networks
Local programs in neighborhoods from Clairemont to East Village show steady growth through shared events and volunteer networks.
How we reported this

High school athletic club sign-ups across San Diego rose 18 percent for the 2025-26 school year, with the San Diego Unified School District logging 4,200 new participants in track, soccer and volleyball teams.
The increase comes as families seek structured after-school options amid rising youth activity costs and limited park space in dense neighborhoods. District officials noted the trend during a June board meeting when they reviewed facility booking data from the prior spring.
Neighborhood Programs Draw Steady Crowds
At Mission Bay High School on Grand Avenue, the cross-country club added two new training groups that meet three mornings a week along the bay path near Fiesta Island. In the East Village, the San Diego High athletic boosters opened a weekend equipment-sharing hub on 16th Street that supplies cleats and balls to 120 students from nearby schools without separate club fees.
Both sites run monthly community clean-ups at adjacent parks to keep fields usable, an arrangement that started in March 2025 after the district cut maintenance budgets by $1.2 million.
Numbers Show Sustained Local Support
Club membership records list average dues at $145 per season, down from $180 two years ago because parent volunteers now handle registration and snack sales. The San Diego Youth Athletic Council reported on July 2 that 92 percent of clubs met their volunteer-hour targets this spring, with 1,850 total hours logged at Balboa Park fields alone.
Families can register for fall sessions starting July 20 through the district website or at the Clairemont Recreation Center on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. The next open house for new members is scheduled for July 28 at the East Village hub.
